Subject: FEAR OF BARE NAIL BED!!! Please Help

Message:
Carol, I read your last comment on the an infection where losing your finger is a possibility...what does this infection look like? My nail is basically completely off the nail bed, but I've been putting tape around the nail and finger (I shut a car door on my thumb). I know that taping the nail down won't promote growth (because it hasn't), I just don't want my bare nail bed showing! But it looks like my nail is only a day away of completely falling out, and I don't know what to do! Isn't a bare nail bed too sensitive to leave exposed? I'm kinda kicking myself, because I think if I kept my nail completely dry since I had it drilled (to remove excess blood under the nail), it might have healed. But anyway, I hate wearing gloves, I want my thumb to look as normal as possible, but I DON'T want an infection! Wearing band-aids for 18 months (which is about how long a finger nail to grow back)just seems too expensive (you gotta change it after every shower or hand-washing)!!! Help, someone, please!

The infection factor is generally just while the nail is lifted from the bed, but not after the nail falls off.

Now if you have a "sore" you need to keep it clean and dry as much as possible as it heals, but would use the oils to keep it hydrated and healthy once the scab sets.

Nail beds are sensitive, some times more than others. But this whole time that your nail has been loosening from the bed, your nail bed has been preparing itself for the impact.

If you want to hide it while it heals for going out on the town and such, put a press on nail for the event, but don't leave it on for more than two days at a time or you could run into one of those bacterial infections I mentioned.

Drilling the nail was actually GOOD for your situation. You would have been in pain a LOT longer if they hadn't done that. Plus keeping it dry for a while helped prevent the bacterial infection from starting.

Just keep working with it, you'll be ok, I promise! I don't know how your nail will look when it does grow back but give it time... the root has to heal completely so it can produce a nail again. Sometimes they grow back distorted and a plastic surgeon can sometimes correct the disfigurement to an extent.

Keep your chin up...

I have worn false nails for 5-6 years. Now I have half (left or right side, or bottom only) fingernails with the rest of my nail bed bare and raw. I don't know what to do to make them better. I have soaked them in peroxide which is extremely painful. I have tried Naftin cream. I am at my wits end . The doctor said it just had to grow out. Can anyone help me?

I have a similar situation on my left hand. I was wearing acrylics and on Wednesday morning I was laying in bed. I must have moved and somehow whacked my middle finger on my left hand against my foot (don't ask, I'm a crazy sleeper!), and I thought the fake nail had just popped off, but the pain was excruciating (sp?) and I knew something was wrong. Turns out my natural nail had ripped all the way off and is just hanging on by the cuticle. I kid you not, I passed out when that happened because it hurt so bad, and I usually have a high tolerance to pain. (I've had 3 epidurals in the past for a back problem and they were nothing, but this...oh man.)

Right now I'm just babying that finger and keeping it bandaged with plenty of Neosporin. I got the acrylic off last night finally). I'm scared to death it'll get infected or a fungal problem will erupt or something like that. :\ Should I see a doctor or just take care of this on my own?

Unless there is a sign of infection (swelling, redness, oozing, etc.), you don't really need to see a doctor. Keep doing what you are doing and wait. Only time will allow the nail to grow back to normal.
