Message: As a professional Nail Tech, I gennerally do not put artificial nails on nurses because of the risk of infection.
Go to this page on my site and look in the links on the right. there is an article about what long nails in general can do to patients.

Natural AND Artificial nails... I stick to the general rule of thumb that nurses are taught in school. "If you can see the nail over the end of your finger--they have to be cut"
BUT don't let this discourage you from "treating" yourself! Go for regular manicures, every week or every two weeks. That is YOUR time. Enjoy yourself and relax. the old saying goes: "No one notices if you hands are manicured, but they DO notice when they are NOT." Take care of you nails and hands, you are in constant contact with patients, and they DO see if you are "groomed" or not. Manicures count too. If your nails are well kempt, they will see it. If not, they see that too and wonder how clean you are with everything else.
