Subject: Natural nail after acrylic
Message: I have acrylic nails and have had them off and on for about 5 years. I really like them but they are so expensive to take care of. When I go to the salon they don't want to take them off. When doing my nails they drill the underside of my nail that has grown out. What do I need to do and how do I go about fixing my nails so that I can have natural nails again. My nails look so good just being natural.

Message: Who ever you have been going to for your acrylics is ruining your nails... find another salon with a GOOD reputation, and that will listen to your concerns. A nail tech that won't (or can't) communicate with their clients is being negligent. And using a drill on the underside of the nail is not wise, assuming they are using the same drill bit they used on the acrylic on top. A fine grit bit does well to clean the underside, but will make them even more thin than they were.
Go get a good nail treatment like OPI, Revivanail, or Nail Tek Xtra. Those are very good brands--I prefer the Nail Tek Xtra after enhancements are removed. Follow the directions on the package and keep the process up.
Then get a good fortifying lotion WITHOUT mineral oil. Massage that into your cuticles several times a day.
Before long, you will have better nails. In all honesty, with the little bit on information you gave I am assuming you have been going to discount salons for your acrylics, and those are not as expensive as you think. Start getting manicures instead, just to help get you back in "shape". But I do suggest going and finding a nail tech in your area that is educated in what is good and bad and can answer any questions you have. Go check out my own website (http://tenx10nails.tripod.com), there is a section on things you SHOULD expect from your nail tech, and what to watch for.
There is another site you might be interested in for finding a salon near you. www.beautytech.info and it's very helpful. The webmaster started this site in connection with the 20/20 episodes this year and last year about problem salons. If you can't find one on there (still creating the database) email me and I'll try to find one for you.
I wish you well!
