Subject: FINGER NAIL PROBLEMS
Message: My fingernails are splitting (one hand only) right down to the cuticle and peeling as though they were made of onion skins. Also the peeling has caused a chunck to fall out. What can be done to stop this nonsense.
Thanks
Yael

Message: I came here seeking help for the same problem! My nails on both hands are cracking and have splits in them, and like Yael said, "chunks" are falling off. Hope someone can come up with some help for all of us!

Message: Cathy,
You sound like I did with my first messege. The only thing that changed between yesteredy and today is, that my physician (orthopedic) put me on so many food supplements and vitamins, I am hoping that something will drop off at the nails and improve them. The situation is really ugly and... at times painful. I wonder if today's physician training stops at the 'nails' - reason being they are too far out and too far removed from the "actual" body. Who know what goes through their heads. I'll let you know about the supplements, if you want a list of them, will be glad to provide. However, may I ask a question. About about your toe nnails? My toe nails are tough, especially the big toe nail. Yael.

Message: Until about three months ago, I could use my fingernails as screwdrivers--they were that strong. Now, three fingernails on my left hand are very thin and have split vertically down to the cuticle with "gaps" resulting. I stopped using nail polish, cuticle care, EVERYTHING other than soap and water. So far, none of the other nails show signs of deterioration. I asked my general doctor what's up, but since there isn't a prescription for thinning fingernails, he was at a loss....
There is something interesting about this. If I wear nail polish for a few weeks, then stop, my fingernail beds are very sore for about two days. I wonder if the polish prohibits oxygen from getting to the nails, and this splitting/thinning is the ultimate result.

Message: Arlene, don't know what to say. One of my nails has disintegrated so badly it is painful. The only thing that changed is the massive food supplements I am on with doctor approval for combat a severe arthritic condition. I don't know about nail polish or anything like that stopping the oxygen from going to the cuticle. Some people I know are using nail creams, I don't know about that except that the nail cream people might get rich. I'll keep you informed about the massive supplements I am taking. Yael.

Message: I don't know, Debi, I'm not a doctor. However, under doctor supervision i have been put on massive vitamins and food supplements to combat a severe arthritic condition, ostereo-arthritis. The doctor is hopinng I would regenerate new cells and thereby avoid painful surgery. In the process I now discovered that my nails have been improving. I'm not out of the woods by any means, see an improvement. My arthritic condition is still severe. I am not suggesting anything here however I read or heard that they now think there is a connection between nail problems and other hidden internal problems. You might have to prodd the doctor (HMO's are useless here) but investigate and look into it. I am only suggesting avenues not cures.
Yael.

Message: That seems to be a medical problem. I'm not a physician not related to any of the medical fields. You probably need to see a physician regarding your problem. Sorry. Yael.
